Raigad Fort: In 1656, Shivaji defeated Chandarrao More in a fierce battle. He also took over a fantastic military site that had tremen- dous security potential. But it had little by way of fortification. The fort was Raigad located in the district of the same name. 4 years later, in the sum- mer of 1670, Shivaji moved his capital to Raigad. It can be only approached from Pachad, a sleepy village that lies near the base of the mountain. Raigad got its name from the mountain Rairi and it was so inaccessible, the Euro- peans called it the Gibraltor of the East. Shivaji was coronated here on 6th june, 1674. He also breathed his last here on 3rd April 1680.
Nearest railhead: Mahad on Konkan Railway .175 kms from Mumbai. Connected by Road.
