You will set foot in underground cellar where Rani Padmini and her compatriots performed Jauhar, a mass suicide by immolating themselves-a Rajput custom followed to avoid humiliation at the hands of the enemy in the face of defeat. In 1303, Allauddin Khilji, Sultan of Delhi, invaded it, besotted by the gorgeous queen of Chittaurgarh, Rani Padmini. You will visit the Zanana Mahal, where a mirror reflection of her famed beauty was shown to Allauddin Khilji, setting off the tragic invasion which led to the Jauhar. There are others historic spots. The Meera & Kumba Shyam Temple, and Meerabai's Temple, mystic poetess & devotee to Lord Krishna. You will also visit the Kalika Mata Temple, dedicated to Kali, the fiery Goddess of power. Chittaurgarh will transport you back in time, to an era when pride was greater than power, King were the envoys of God.
There is no place in India which sets fire to the imagination of poets & painters, travellers & writers, the way Udaipur does. Set amidst an amphitheatre of low-lying mountains & flanked by three lakes and far- flung plains, Udaipur's streets are lined by gardens, temples, esplanades and palaces- and every feature is mirrored in the placid blue water of Lake Pichola.
