Ajanta
With aesthetic appetite whetted by Elephanta, one must move on to carved
caves
of Ajanta and Ellora, ranked high among the greatest wonders of the world. Northeast
of Bombay, near Aurangabad, are two astonishing series of temples carved out of the living
rock over the course of fourteen centuries, After their heyday, the caves were
abandoned. Ajanta was forgotten until 1819. when a British hunting party stumbled upon
the site.
Others Buddhist temples with stupas
inside, are also carved from the rock cliff of Ajanta. The caves are adorned
with elaborate sculptures and painting. There are several chaitya grihas or prayer halls at
Ajanta.
