Places to eat
It is probably the best vegetarian restaurant in
the city. It's a smart place but main dishes are good value.
The Indian Coffee House, near Kolkata University, is an institution. For years it was the meeting place of the city's intellectuals. Nowadays it's mostly younger undergraduates who congregate beneath the faded portrait of Rabindranath Tagore in this large cafe. Nevertheless it's a good place to meet people and is convenient for a coffee and snack if you've been looking round the many bookshops in this area. There's a much more central branch on Chittaranjan Ave, and a sign warns that the management 'reserves the right to maintain the dignity of the coffee shop'. It is right in the centre of town at 11 Waterloo St. The food is excellent and it is often voted by resident of Kolkata as the best place to eat in the city. On Sudder St, does it English-style, for residents and non-guests alike. The set lunches and dinner can be fun and are certainly different, announced by a gong and served in impatient style by uniformed waiters. It is also on Sudder St, has a waterfall flowing through its middle. It's as expensive, but is packed with rich people of Kolkata who say it's worth it.
