he 350 old forts of Maharashtra come in all shapes, sizes and locations. In Maharashtra most of the fort were connected directly or indirectly with Shivaji Maharaj. Their walls have resounded with war cries, victory calls, swords clashing, shields changing. Today, they stand silent. Once responsible for the rise and fall of many an empire. Witnesses to history. And, more often than not, helping create it. Strategically located, these forts were the stronghold wherein was concentrated the power and possessions of the rulars. Winning or losing these forts often amounted to winning or losing entire kingdoms. The 17th century Maratha leader. Shivaji was born in a fort, Shivenri on 19th Feb 1630. And he died in a fort at Raigad. Fort were an integral part of his life, as he lived in them, fought for them, captured them, built them and rebuilt them. Some of the forts are:
