Until Independence, Mysore was the seat of the maharajas of Mysore, a princely state covering about a third of present-day Karnataka. Orientation
The railway station is on the north-western fringe of
the city center, about a km from the main shopping street, Sayaji Roa
Road. The central bus terminal is on the Bangalore Mysore Road, on the
north-eastern fringe of the city center. Mysore Palace occupies the
entire south-eastern sector of the city center. Chamundi Hills is an
ever visible landmark to the south.
